How to successfully transition from winter to spring February 21 2022

So we may be coming towards the end of February but as this past weekend has shown we are certainly not through with winter. However with the White Snowdrops, colourful crocuses and the odd daffodil making an appearance I’m starting to get itchy feet about spring. Don’t get me wrong i love winter styling with chunk knits and tweed skirts but I am ready to start switching it up by incorporating some spring feels into my wardrobe.

I am not about to start insisting you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe just for spring but i can help you with just a few extra pieces to go with your existing winter wardrobe. So lets make a start...

Layers are Key

Spring can be glorious but it can also be pretty miserable in a matter of half an hour so on these days layers are your best friend. Think Lightweight sweaters, cardigans over a frilly Shirt. Alternatively you may already have one of our Ainderby Oversized Tops... this is great for layering as its already super roomy and you can even pair it with white jeans for a really fresh look

Choose light or Bright

Now dark colours such as navy or black aren’t just for winter but to help breathe new life into an outfit choose either a light or bright contrast in your layers, these can even be the accessories you wear, such as our new Knotted tweed Hair bands.

Transition the Classics for all year round wear.

Take advantage of your tweed skirt, a classic that can be worn all year round when paired with the right layers. As you transition from winter to spring you will start with the need to pair you skirt with tights however as the days get warmer you may opt of a lighter denier and as summer approaches you may decide to be bare legged with sandals however that’s a few months down the line from now. So in the meantime keep to tights and lighter colours on your the top half.

Busting Myths about Tweed!  

Todays Myth Buster is all about tweed and the association of it being itchy? 

So first we need to look back at the associations we have with tweed...

A lot of people associate Tweed with being the hairy coarse fabric their father or grandfather once wore in a jacket. This is likely to have been that of the traditional Harris Tweed which is almost a special case as most normal tweed cloth is now made from more prepared yarns with finer and smoother threads, so it's important to realise that there is a big difference between Harris tweed and that of Yorkshire Woven tweed.

Secondly we need to look at the production of the Tweed... 

In the present day, we now have multiple varieties of different types and weights of Wool Tweed for example... Worsted Wool is prepared differently to Harris Tweed and in turn so is Yorkshire Woven Tweed. 

Worsted Wool Yarn is prepared by combing individual strands to lie in the same direction and removing the smaller (hairier lengths) this makes the wool, finer, stronger and generally a tighter woven tweed... regarded as a high quality fabric. 

Harris tweed yarn doesn't undergo this technique so the resulting spun thread and cloth are consequently a bit thicker, bit hairier(itchier) and appears to be bulkier even for the same weight.

Yorkshire Woven Tweed is somewhere in the middle, it is softer, thinner and finer than that of the Harris Tweed however not to the extreme of the Worsted Wool making it the perfect cloth for me to create my amazing accessories and clothing.

And finally when producing garments for my Tweedy customers I not only source the right Tweed fabric that is perfectly apt for its job, I also prevent the source of itching by creating a barrier with either a polyester fleece lining... in most of my accessories or polyester satin lining in my clothing.

Top Tweedy Treats to buy Mum and Grandma this Mothers Day

This years Mothering Sunday is only a few weeks away...Sunday 14th March to be exact. So time to put on your tweed hat and start thinking of gifts... to give you a hand I have personally selected some tweedy treats we just know your mum/grandma is going to love! 

  First up our good friend the facemask available in both the cotton or tweed check. All our face masks are received with 1x filter and 1x bendable nose band - which I hear is great for preventing steam if mum or grandma wears glasses. We have some really pretty floral ones, very Cath Kidson also some fun animal prints as well as our traditional and vibrant tweed checks. 2 for £15 for the cotton facemasks or £10.50 for our tweed facemasks. We may be heading into spring and lighter nights but I can guarantee we are still having those chilly mornings and cold evenings however a cosy headband is just the answer! A really useful present especially if mum/grandma really loves being active in the great outdoors. 

Next is the Jessica Snood which made an appearance on my Instagram reels last week and lots of you loved this style. Easy to wear our Jessica Snood is similar to the Classic Snood, with the button and loop detail. However the pleated suede frames the face giving this detail the wow factor! Great to match with our Headbands.

 An alternative to our Tweed Snoods and Jessica Snoods are our Alice Scarf. A neat detailed scarf, also fleece lined crosses over the body to pull thorough a loop. This neat scarf isn't as chunky as our snoods and will certainly carry them  through the seasons.

 Keeping it cosy in the home with our scatter Tweed Cushion, handmade with applique detail each cushion features beautiful countryside animals, tones and textures of warmth to fill the home. Goodbye February you fabulous month...

Hello March!

Its Pay Day tomorrow... and March is looking like layers are key! Weather your wearing them to walk the dog, heading to the shops or to enjoy the spring sunshine.

Tweed is key at this time of year and just one layer can make all the difference with its hygroscopic qualities your body temperature will be kept to your natural temperature. 

What's the one thing you look for when purchasing a new headband?! February 12 2021

Perhaps it that it's made with Pure Wool Tweed for its insulating qualities as a hygroscopic fabric. Also for being breathable, wool has a unique structure that allows it to absorb and release moisture without it effecting its thermal efficiency. Also wool is naturally an elastic fibre which helps to keep our headbands in shape too.

Or our Anti-pill Polyester Fleece lining which makes our headbands highly breathable with a comfortable layer of insulation as polyester fleece traps air pockets between its fibres creating warm air from your natural body heat. Also our polyester fleece is light weight and delicately soft when worn next to sensitive skin.

Perhaps it's that the fleece is all treated to be Anti-pill Polyester this prevents balls (or pills) of thread appearing on the surface of the fabric. The anti pill treatment means the fleece will be bobble free for longer.

Or like me you like the elastic at the back of your headband to be covered for a finished off desirable look.

Perhaps a pretty tweed to catch your eye but also something practical drawn from the countryside our Yorkshire woven tweed certainly covers both of them pointers.
